The Department of Homeland Security and several partners teamed up last month to begin field testing a new wireless broadband technology that promises to allow interoperability between existing infrastructures. DHS developed the Radio Over Wiress Broadband, dubbed "ROW-B," with the several industry partners, including ISCO International and Raytheon, as well as receiving heavy first responder input. The system will be pilot tested in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the DC Office of the Chief Technology Officer. "The ROW-B pilot represents an important milestone in our efforts to advance interoperability progress," said David Boyd, head of the Science & Technology Directorate's Command, Control and Interoperability Division at a demonstration of the technology on Aug. 27. "The capability to communicate among radio and broadband system users will significantly improve emergency response operations by allowing non-radio users to communicate with response units in the field."
