Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman faced criticism from Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) last week during a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on the Administration's FY 2007 budget request, with Cantwell questioning proposed cuts to cleanup the Hanford tank farms despite an overall increase for the site. Cantwell is one of several lawmakers who have recently expressed concerns about cuts in funding for the Department of Energy's cleanup program, which received $5.83 billion in the FY 2007 request, representing an almost 12 percent decrease from current appropriations (WC Monitor, Vol. 17 No. 6). New Mexico state officials have gone so far as to warn that the Dept. of Energy could suffer fines for missing cleanup milestones because of proposed cleanup funding cuts for Los Alamos National Laboratory. DOE officials have said, though, that the requested funding is adequate to honor the Department's commitments. "The $5.8 billion budget request remains focused on EM's mission of reducing risk by cleaning up sites, consequently also reducing environmental liability," Bodman said in his prepared testimony at the Feb. 9 hearing.
