Sainsbury's and Asda, the UK's second and third largest grocery chains respectively, have agreed to merge in a deal that will seernthe duo leapfrog Tesco to become the country's leading mass grocery retail (MGR) player. The combined business willrnhave revenues of GBP51bn, 360,000 staff and over 2,800 stores (including general merchandiser Argos which is owned byrnSainsbury's). Both the Sainsbury's and Asda brands will be maintained as part of the tie-up, and US-based Walmart, which paidrnGBP6.7bn to buy Asda in 1999, will receive GBP3bn in cash and a 42% stake in the group.
