The Latest: After seven years, the Irish government has awarded the contract for the National Broadband Plan (NBP) to NationalBroadband Ireland (NBI), a consortium of investors led by American businessman David McCourt.Implications: The NBP aims to cover an additional 540,000 premises across the country with high speed broadband, laying downup to 140,000km of fibre-optic cable. The plan could cost up to EUR3bn in public subsidies and will focus on improving broadbandaccess particularly in rural areas. NBI will run the network as a wholesale provider, granting access to operators active in the country.
