Qne has to look out for engineers - they begin with sewing machines and end up with the atomic bomb.rnThis wry caution accurately reflects my own view, engineer though I be, of attempts to 'engineer' society. In this case, the issue is the development of a strong market in the building construction industry for solid-state lighting. Government attempts at fixing things are usually ham-handed and more often than not bring on a shower of unintended and unwanted consequences. The foolishness of premature legislation concerning lighting equipment has already been discussed in these pages.
