摘要

THE NUTTALL ORNITHOLOGICAL CLUB 1987-2015. William E. Davis, Jr., David B. Donsker, and Dana R. Duxbury-Fox. Memoirs of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, No. 21. 2017: ix+283 pages. 18 figures. ISBN 978-1-877973-51-2. $35.00 (cloth).—Founded in 1873, the Nuttall Ornithological Club is the oldest ornithological society in America and is the progenitor to the American Ornithologists Union, recently recast as the American Ornithological Society. The Nuttall Club was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and remains based there today. Nuttall is an organization dominated by amateurs but known to publish important scientific monographs and histories. Certainly, its 2 formal series, the Publications and the Memoirs, are the reason the Club is nationally known. The volume reviewed here seeks to document the latest activities of the Club since the 1987 publication of History of the Nuttall Club 1873-198 7. This new volume is very much focused on the details of the Club's activities over this 3-decade period, and New England birders and historians will be grateful to have this resource. Davis and his co-authors have been assiduous in tracking down all sorts of data on the Club, which will be of interest to local readers and Club members. Of greatest interest to a wider array of ornithologists will be the biographical chapter, which provides one-page biographies (with black and white photographic portraits in many instances) of all the members during this period. Ernst Mayr, arguably Nuttall's most famous professional member, gets a full 3 pages. Well-packaged in the traditional Nuttall style.—BRUCE M. BEEHLER, Division of Birds, MRC 116, Smithsonian Institution, PO Box 37012, Washington, DC 20013; BeehlerB@si.edu.
