Dear WoodenBoat, I read Tom Jackson's article, "A Simple Change of Hat" (WB No. 253), about Doug Hylan's Bowler, with high interest. While the author envisions having a Bowler as an adjunct to his sailing passion, I think more should be said on the motivation for having a boat such as Bowler. My wife and I want to explore the utterly marvelous 3,000 miles of Maine coastline. We see ourselves traveling from one place to another at a stately pace taking in all the breathtaking scenery while overnighting in harbors and pleasant anchorages. The Maine coast divides itself basically into large bays, and changing from one to the other usually involves going out and around. Getting from Casco Bay to Boothbay Harbor is a typical example where one goes around Cape Small. Rounding these points on anything other than a rare calm day can be less than comfortable. Bowler makes these forays into rougher waters with a clean cutting bow, and a nice dry passage. And once in the bays, where everyone can admire her lovely lines, we have protection from sun, rain, and damp.
