The researching of a historical yacht typically begins with Lloyd's Register of Yachts. This list, published by the venerable old British insurance market Lloyd's of London, was originally issued in 1878, and save for the war years it was updated annually until ceasing publication in 1980 (although a listing of yachts built to Lloyd's classifications continued for 18 years longer). North American yachts appeared in the original Register beginning in 1879, and in 1903 the expanding popularity of American yachting begat a separate and distinct North American edition called Lloyd's Register of American Yachts.
