As a youngster, John Brooks led a life that most boys can only dream about. Before he was ten, . His grandfather had taught him how to sail and make boat models. Five years later he joined his grandparents and other family members, aboard a Spencer 44 cutter, for a voyage from Vancouver, Canada, to Cape Town, South Africa. Along the way they called at Hawaii, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, Tonga, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Australia, and enough other places to make for a good "on-the-road" movie.
