I've been looking forward to Wooden-Boat'?,review of the Torqeedo outboard,and was disappointed that Dan Crete never tried it on a small sailboat.It seems to me that gasoline remains the logical primary propulsion for a harbor tender,but as small two-stroke outboards are no longer available,and four-stroke motors cannot be stored flat,owners of small sailboats would have appreciated learning about this new auxiliary option.I wish that Dan's review had not missed the opportunity. Dan Crete tested the short-shaft version of the Toqeedo Travel,which would have been inappropriate as an auxiliary on most modest-sized sailboats.Contributing editor Harry Bryan purchased a long-shaft late last season,however,and he issues a glowing report about its performance on his new 3,000-lb,20' pocket cruiser.The motor,Harry says,got him home on calm evenings and saved him from at least one close encounter with a he shore.While he speculates that he could make some headway with sails up in rough weather,he says that the motor's strong point is motoring in aflat calm.He remembers one particularly calm ebbtide evening: 'It would have been a very long night without the Torqeedo.'
