For several years in the late 1970s and early '80s,my brother Frank and I would ride our bicycles on summer Saturday mornings from our home in Salem,Massachusetts,to adjacent Marblehead to meet a family friend Our friend functioned as an agent of sorts for us,fixing us up with a different boat each weekend-an Etchells 22 one Saturday,a Rhodes 19 the next.It was a great education in class boats during a high point in one-design competition at Marblehead.One of my more memorable outings during that era of free agency was a Marblehead Race Week aboard a Town Class sloop,when the owner,whom I'd onlyjust met,handed me the helm for the entire regatta.
