A withy is a small sapling,twisted so that,its fibers split,making something akin to a rope.Six were gathered,but only two were used.The root ball is used as a stopper knot in the withy,which passes through holes in the rudder and a sculpted fitting on the hull.The twisted trunk is made off with a clove hitch to a breasthook,with wedges driven to tighten it.The first withy,fitted in Dublin,survived hundreds of miles of hard sailing.A replacement made at Portsmouth,England,lasted the rest of the voyage.
