"You gotta be a fanatic screwball to do this." This was Konrad Ulbrich's assessment of his restora-tion of HAYDAY. Frank C. Paine, the designer of the yacht, would no doubt agree; he was no sentimentalist and embraced modern technology. HAYDAY, launched in 1930 as FALCON (the second Paine-designed boat of that name, was the last of her breed-the final expression of the Universal Rule Q class. The Universal Rule, conceived by Nathanael Herres-hoff in the late 1890s, was adopted by the New York Yacht Club in 1903; major clubs,.along the East Coast followed soon thereafter. The new rule rendered obsolete the majority of the long-ended racing sailboats built before 1903-the year the AMERICA'S Cup defender RELIANCE, a 144' technological wonder but highly demanding and impractical, illuminated all that was wrong with the then-dominant Seawanhaka Rule, to which she was designed.
