When John started building boats in the late 1970s, he and the rest of the boatyard crew used a router with a common flush-cutting bit, called a laminate trimmer, only to finish off Formica counter-tops in the galley and head. Pattern-cutting bits? Never saw one of those near the boats. When we started designing and building glued-lapstrake boats in our own shop more than a decade later, John took the experience he had gained with these bits in the boatyards-and also during a brief sabbatical spent in a small shop producing harpsichord keys, organ keyboards, and kitchen cabinets-and put them to work making parts and planks. The techniques we'll describe here can be a great help whether you're building one boat in your garage, producing an entire fleet with friends or in a school program, or turning out production or custom boats commercially. If your boat needs repairs and replacement pieces, these techniques also will serve well.
