In plenty of locations around the world, particular wind, wave, and depth conditions have given rise to boats uniquely suited to their environments. The sand-bagger, for example, is ideal for the sheltered, shoal waters of New York Harbor. The stout channel cutter is perfect for the blustery conditions between England and France. In northern New Jersey more than a century and a half ago, the sheltered waters of Barnegat Bay brought about the birth of the 12' wooden sailing duckboat. Today, a renaissance in duckboat racing is under way here, and for one day every summer the duckboat still rules.
