We were a Canadian family living in Cape Town, South Africa. My father was the senior manager of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada there. I had just finished school in December 1936 and had started my first job in 1937. My mandatory military training (part-time) started in January that year. I chose the navy because I wanted to learn navigation so that I too could sail around the world.rnI went down to the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town Harbour. I asked them if I could borrow a dinghy because I wanted to row out to meet Harry Pidgeon on his yawl the ISLANDER. The enclosed photograph was taken with a Kodak box camera.
