摘要

Most tourists who visit Thailand will have ridden on a wooden boat. It may have been one of the Chao Phrya Express boats in Bangkok, a converted rice barge for a riverine dinner, or one of the high-prowed long-tail boats on the beaches of Phuket. While a few of all classes of wooden boats are still being built in Thailand, their days are clearly numbered.rnThis decline, explains Khun Kanok Khaomala, is for much the same reason that working wooden boats have disappeared or are disappearing around the world: Thailand's teak forests have been logged out, and skilled workers have been drawn away from the traditional boatyards into other industries. He draws on a wealth of knowledge from his father, 72-year-old Khun Phaithoon Khaomala, who, with his wife, Rattana, founded the Thai Boat Museum.
