"There has never been, to my knowledge, a synthesis of the history of naval architecture in any language that critically evaluates the reasons for its development and application, and takes into account the exchange of ideas between individuals of different nations. Very well: I will write the first." With this prefatory comment, Larrie Ferreiro has done just that. Naval architecture as a science was not born in the dockyards of Renaissance Europe, but in the Age of Enlightenment when academies of science were organized for learned men who contemplated the world from the broadest viewpoints of mathematics and the physical and natural sciences.
