Plans for large-scale beach nourishment along Galveston Island, Texas (Figure 1) were first announced by the Texas Land Commissioner, Jerry Patterson, in 2003 to address the severe erosion along the island's Gulf beaches. Averaging up to 10 ft/yr in some locations, the erosion has posed an ongoing threat to beach recreation, tourism, infrastructure and housing, and natural resources since the island was first developed over a century ago.
