After a long wait, at last the tide has turned for navigable waterways in the Walloon Region. Indeed, for many years, these were no longer dredged due to the absence of a technical solution for processing pol-luted sludge which had accumulated on canal and river beds throughout Wallonia. Indeed, so far polluted sludge could only be stored in so called Centresrnd'Enfouissement Techniques (CET). An important decision taken by the Walloon minister of port infrastructure, Mr. Daerden, has triggered now a sustainable solution to this problem.rnMinister Daerden confirms that following a European tender procedure a contract has been awarded to ECOTERRES SA for treatment on annual basis of 285,000 m~3 of contaminated silt during a period of four years. In the actual treatment process the contaminated particles of the dredged sludge will be permanently immobilized. Though the pollutants will remain present in the sludge, they will be entirely neutralized by the process of encap- sulation.
