The Savannah (Georgia, GA) District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a US$9.1M contract for Tybee Beach Renourishment to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company on Aug. 27. During the project, contractors will pump 1.22M yd3 of sand along Tybee's front beach area. The sand will come from a borrow site located approx. 1.5 mi. offshore of Tybee Island. The federal government will fund approx. 60% of the cost while the remainder of the funding will come from the City of Tybee Island, Chatham County, and the State of Georgia. Construction activities will begin in October and be completed by March 2009. Once begun, construction activities will continue 24 hrs a day, seven days a week, weather permitting. The public should use caution and good judgement when visiting the beach. Bcachgoers should stay clear of the immediate work area and away from heavy equipment and machinery. Portions of the beach will be closed to the public as work progresses.
