Differences between exporting and non-exporting firms have been a core topic in the literature on the micro-econometrics of international firm activities that started with the pioneering paper by Bernard and Jensen (1995) and that is surveyed in Greenaway and Kneller (2007) and in Wagner (2007a). This literature shows, among others, that exporters are more productive than non-exporters. Germany is a case in point; productivity differentials in favour of exporting firms compared to firms that sell their products on the national market only are found to be statistically significant and economically important even when observed and unobserved firm characteristics are controlled for.
