Many papers in the empirical literature on the heterogeneity of firms find that a productivity premium is associated with international involvement. Two fundamental questions from this topic are still unanswered. The first question regards the amount of the productivity premium, which, although in relative terms, is rarely measured. The second question regards the direction of the causality link between productivity and international openness. Does a self-selection mechanism induce the more productive firms to enter the international market, or do internationalised firms, under the pressure of global competition, become more productive by means of a learning-by-exporting process? The present paper does not provide a definitive answer to the above questions but certainly provides some insights on them.
