摘要

Large developing countries, and emerging economies, typically Brazil, India, China and South Africa (BICS), demonstrate a strong upward trend in many aspects of their macroeconomic performance in recent decades. This developmental surge has been sometimes attributed to 'size effects' whereby economies of scale and scope, and agglomeration impact, create productivity improvements. Most of the literature studying large countries emphasises the real economy, trade and growth (Alesina and Spolaore, 1997, 2003), but says little about the interrelationship of real and financial sectors on development.
