This paper aims to shed light on why the contraction in global trade during the intensification of the financial crisis in 2008Q4-2009Q1 was so severe and synchronised across the world, and which was particularly pronounced for trade in capital and intermediate goods. Indeed, standard trade equations fail to capture the global trade downturn.
