Bespite a short slowdown between 2000 and 2003, flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) have been steadily increasing since the beginning of the 1990s, reaching a peak of $1,411 billion in 2006 (United Nations, 2007). Multinational firms are one of the major symbols of globalisation; they are responsible for a large share of world production and of international trade. Multinationals no longer aim solely at serving developed markets with final manufactured goods. They are now developing their activities in the service sector, targeting transition and developing economies at a growing rate, and benefiting from falling trade costs to fragment their production processes internationally.
