History, like road surfacing, is littered with myths and misconceptions. An overlay will smooth up anything? Anyone can build a smooth road? Sir Walter Raleigh discovered asphalt in March 1595? It won't, they can't and he didn't. Sir Robert Dudley, Earl of Warwick actually visited the famous "Pitch Lake" at La Brea in Trinidad three months earlier. Of course, the first records of the use of pitch and its introduction to Europe, can be attributed to the adventurous Sir Walter (it is reported that he used it to caulk his leaking ships) but, in the asphalt business, don't take anything for granted.
