Brazil's National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) has launched a major offensive to cancel or reduce patents on pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. Starting in mid-September and continuing into October, INPI has filed 37 lawsuits challenging the patents on 247 products. These were patents that were granted through what is known as the mailbox or pipeline provision of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights ("TRIPS Agreement").
