The value of tobacco exports doubled in 2007, the Uganda Export Promotion Board said in April. It grew from US$26.9m in 2006 to US$66.3m in 2007, a leap of 146%. Volumes also grew, though not so dramatically, from 15,794mkg in 2006 to 26,384mkg in 2007, a growth of 67%. The rebound can be attributed to BAT Uganda, which posted it highest export volumes in years -19,000 MT in 2007, 72% of total national export volumes. That was up from 12,700 MT in 2006. BATU had increased farmer prices in early 2007. The bulk of the money went to farmers in the flue-cured Virginia growing districts Arua, Yumbe, Lira, Gulu, Apac and Kihihi. In a statement, the company said it aims to producing 20,000 MT of leaf in 2008, about equal to 2007.
