Tesco in the UK has driven down the cost of a pair of jeans to £3 ($5) less than a fifth of the price in multiple stores such as Gap or Marks & Spencer and less than a tenth of the price of big brands such as Levis or Calvin Klein jeans. Their ability to do this by careful supply chain management and huge purchasing power is interesting, but not as interesting as to why anyone still buys the higher priced products. John Ruskin the Victorian philosopher and writer is quoted as having said "there is nothing in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper".
