摘要

Some years ago, a number of countries had their sights set on becoming tobacco free by the year 2000, but none of them hit the target. Now, Bhutan, which has been working at tobacco control for more than 250 years, is making the running, as KENCHO WANGDI reports from Thimphu. Even as the World Health Organization (WHO) and some 170 countries work towards implementing a tobacco control convention, Bhutan has gone a step further by banning tobacco sales at all its duty-free outlets. In the past year, duty-free shops, which have been forbidden since January last year from buying new stocks of cigarettes, have been exhausting their supplies.
