It may have been more of a psychological breakthrough than a marketing triumph, but the flue-cured leaf industry in the US was treating the purchase by Chinese buyers of about 9m Ib (farm sales weight) of its product in April as a major victory. The development was particularly encouraging since the People's Republic of China had not made any purchases of flue-cured in the US for so long that no-one still in the business seems to be able to remember when it last did so. In the spring of last year, China ended a long drought of US leaf purchases by buying about I m Ib of Burley, and the same delegation that bought the flue-cured in April also bought an additional 1.6m Ib of Burley.
