Restrictions on tobacco flavour ingredients are growing just as the need for tobacco flavours is increasing in response to factors such as the swing to low-tar cigarettes. This means that the flavourist will have to learn to build more sophisticated flavours with fewer tools. The tobacco industry applies significant amounts of flavours to its products. While cigarettes mostly use only low levels of flavours to deliver taste nuances, remarkable amounts of flavours are applied to some tobacco products, including pipe tobaccos, flavoured cigars, roll-your-own, chewing tobaccos, snuff and water pipe tobaccos. Nevertheless, cigarettes account for the biggest volumes of tobacco flavours because the consumption of cigarettes is huge when compared with that of other tobacco products.
