In the US, Louisville, once a centre of tobacco operations, has lost out as cigarette manufacturers have concentrated their facilities in other cities. And Louisville will suffer another blow in about two years' time when Philip Morris USA is due to move its materials conversion plant to Richmond, where the company is concentrating many of its operations. The city of Richmond, Virginia, is often said to represent the US' best blending of the past and present. And it could be said that in moving its headquarters from New York City to Richmond, the long-time site of its main manufacturing centre, Philip Morris USA is adding the future to that blend. A company spokesman said in May that almost all of the approximately 260 employees involved in the move had made the trek to Virginia by that time, and that the last few were expected to arrive shortly - by the time that this magazine was due to be published. Some renovation work on the new headquarters building was still going on but most of what needed to be done had been completed.
