Despite all the drastic weather, tobacco in the United States fared reasonably well this season, according to the US Department of Agriculture's October crop report, the last report of the year and the most definitive. Among the individual types, the report said: Flue-cured growers enjoyed a substantial increase in yield in 2004 compared to 2003, from 1,957lbs/acre to 2,237lbs/acre. Volume increased from 456,7M/lbs to 5 13.2M/lbs, Of the four flue-cured production areas, the shining star was the Old Belt (Type 11), which includes all the flue-cured growing areas in Virginia along with the Piedmont area of central NC. Growers there harvested a very good average of 2,33Slbs/acre, a full third more than the 1,745lbs/acre they averaged in 2003, Coupled with a bigger planted area, the yield increase lead to an increase in production of about 50%, to 154.1 M/lbs.
