Henry Tuck of Flexlink looks at packaging line efficiency and the impact of buffers on production output. The measurement of the output efficiency of cigarette making and packaging machines has long been a key indicator for cigarette companies as to how well their production lines are running. Not only are individual machines measured, but the efficiency of whole lines is tracked, with the causes of stoppages recorded and analysed. Measuring efficiency and output provides a first step towards eliminating inefficiencies in the production line operation, and provides the basis for making decisions as to how to improve the total output of an individual line. However, given that the loss of each 1 % of output from a production line represents a significant loss of revenue (at 10,000 cigarettes or 500 packs per minute, a 1 % loss of output could represent up to 2,400 packs per shift), what ultimately matters is how much product comes off a line, not how efficient each individual machine is.
