With domestic demand for its leaf decreasing, the Canadian production industry is redoubling its efforts to sell its tobacco overseas, a timely initiative given current developments on the world leaf market. The facts speak for themselves, Although Ontario has a tobacco infra-structure sufficient to produce about 180m lb of flue-cured a year, when growers' representatives, manufacturers and leaf exporters sat down in May last year to set the province's tobacco target for 2003, they finally decided on 94,1 m Ib (with an additional 5m Ib 'trigger' contingent on market performance). The figure of 94.1 m Ib was about 13% lower than the amount agreed the year before (108,1 m Ib) and about 39% down on the target for 1997. The projected target for this year is 93.3m Ib.
