Recent references to tobacco have tended to deal mostly with the effects of smoking on health and, as with most contentious issues, the public is bombarded with claims and counterclaims. How does one differentiate between those that are based on well-founded research results and those that can be described as propaganda? For example, a report of a recent European patent application, 12897821, in Chemistry & Industry, April 21, 2003, under the heading 'Smokers rejoice', is for an anti-ageing skin cream specially directed at smokers, whose skin, it is claimed, ages faster than does the skin of non-smokers.
