The jobs of thousands of people who work within the tobacco industry were given a stay of execution by their government recently when the authorities in Jakarta rebuffed lobbying by anti-smoking organisations trying to limit the amounts of tar and nicotine delivered by tobacco products. The industry said such controls would have meant economic hardship for some growers, especially the smaller-scale growers, and those employed to hand-roll the ever-popular clove cigarette or kretek. Kreteks account for more than 85% of all cigarettes smoked in Indonesia.
