The world's flue-cured supply/demand situation seems to be in relatively good balance. Whether that balance will be maintained depends on the answers that emerge to a number of questions currently hanging over some supplier countries, This is the message that came through loud and clear when 1 spoke recently with three leaf company executives and a leaf executive with a cigarette manufacturer. And the questions that kept coming up were: 1. Does the US have the will to become price competitive? 2. Is there any chance that Zimbabwe will get back into large-scale leaf exports? 3. How much more export leaf can Brazil produce? 4. Which other countries could produce more leaf tobacco?
