Kentucky, according to one observer, is said this year to have been hit by the "worst-case weather scenario", The season started out wet, which hindered root and plant development, and then it dried up, especially in the north of the state, and the rain did not start again until September. The weak root systems led to more damage than would have been caused by the drought alone, as well as to serious black shank damage.
