After completion of the editorial work for "GroBstadt-Dokumente", Hans Ostwald became co-founder and manager of the ,,Verein fuer so-ziale Kolonisation Deutschlands" (Association for the Social Coloni-alization of Germany). The aim of this association was to send unemployed Berliners to remote regions of the empire to develop unused land for settlements. In September 1916, only six years after its founding, the association declared bankruptcy. The reasons for this were not only the aftermath of World War I but also severe mistakes by the management. This article recapitulates the history of this unique experiment of privately organized job creation in the Wilhelmine era.%Das Hauptgebäude des Reichsversicherungsamts, in dem sich heute unter anderem die Verwaltung des WZB befindet, ist ebenfalls ein Schauplatz der Großstadt-Dokumente — und nur einen Steinwurf weit von jenem Ort in der Nähe der Potsdamer Brücke entfernt, wo vor 100 Jahren das italienische Weinlokal „Al Vesuvio" stand. Das Hinterzimmer des Lokals, das auch unter dem Namen seines Besitzers als „Dalbelli" bekannt war, gehörte zu den beliebtesten Treffpunkten der Berliner Autorengemeinschaft, und es ist nicht ausgeschlossen, dass Ostwald hier mit seinen Mitstreitern über den Fortgang seines publizistischen Großprojekts debattierte.
