The Timocka Krajina area is by its geographical and agroecological characteristics a suitable region for walnut growing. Favourable agroecological conditions, generative propagation, natural selection and man's actions contributed to the creation of a rich walnut population (about 180,000 bearing trees). The mentioned conditions facilitate research on walnut selection. In population studies (1989-1991), 26 trees were noted and recorded for their good properties (phenological characters, bearing potential, resistance to diseases and low winter temperatures, fruit characters, chemical composition). All traits were evaluated according to the methods of Germain (1975), Korac (1987) and UPOV. Among the trees singled out, the selections Nos. 8, 11 and 16, and partially selections 1, 3, 15 and 19, are of commercial interest. Selection No. 8 is distinguished by medium early start of the season. Fruits are very large (17.0 g), with high kernel percentage (54.4%). Selection No. 11 has very large fruits, averaging 16.8 g and very high kernel percentage (51.2%). Besides terminal, lateral bearing is also present. Selection No. 16 has an outstanding tree of pronounced vigour and cropping. The fruits are commonly borne in a cluster of 2 or 3. Fruit mass averages 10.0 g and kernel percentage 53.8%. The other selections are distinguished by specific quality properties. In terms of late growth flushing, selections Nos. 26, 3 and 25 merit attention. The selections 4, 7, 13 and 23 have earlier end of the season. The trait of lateral bearing is particularly expressed in selections Nos. 4 and 12. High bearing potential was recorded in selections Nos. 10, 15, 17 and 20. Selections 9 and 24 show a high degree of resistance to Gnomonia leptostyla, and selection 15, and partially selections 3 and 25 are winter hardy. Selections 5, 6, 8 and 11 have large fruit mass and selections 3, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 19 favourable kernel percentage. The nuts of selections 19 and 21 have smooth or almost smooth shell, whereas Nos. 9 and 16 are characterized by highly light-coloured kernel. High kernel oil content was found in selections 3, 9, 10, 13 and 16, and crude protein content in selections 4, 5, 8, 15, 17 and 20.%U radu su prezentirani rezultati rada na selekciji oraha u Timočkoj krajini.
