In 2003, in central Italy, a trial to evaluate the effects of artificial pollination, applied 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 2 + 4 + 5 days after full bloom (AFB - 50% of opened flowers), in addition to free pollination, on development and quality of fruits of the kiwifruit cultivar Hort16A (Actinidia chinensis - Planch.) was carried out. The pollen was "sprayed" on the flowers using a portable dry pollen sprayer. The pollen belonged to the male cultivars Matua and Tomuri. Artificial pollination, with the only exception of that executed 0 days AFB, resulted in a significant increase in fruit size (length, diameter and volume) and weight with respect to the control (free pollination). The highest values were obtained when artificial pollination was applied 2 or 4 days AFB (about +27%) and, above all, when the application was repeated 2, 4 and 5 days AFB (about +35%). The total number of seeds was higher in artificial pollinated fruits than in the control. With respect to control, artificial pollination did not cause substantial changes of flesh firmness, soluble solids and dry matter contents, titratable acidity of juice and colour of fruits..
