摘要

A group of European scientists, recognizing potential threats to European agricultural production as a result of recent global security concerns, has developed a plan to enhance crop biosecurity and threat preparedness levels in the region. A projectproposal, "Crop and Food Biosecurity and Provision of the Means To Anticipate and Tackle Possible Misuse of Plant Pathogens Against Crops," was recently approved by the European Union (E.U.), within its 6th Framework Research Programme (2002-2006). The new project falls within the Policy-Oriented Research Division's priority of "Providing health, security and opportunity to the people of Europe—Issues related to civil protection and crisis management." The designation of the project as a "Co-ordinationAction (CA)" reflects the multidisciplinary, multinational, and cooperative nature of the group's mission and objectives and stresses the objective to also make use of assets that are already available within the international research community to themaximum extent possible.
