BG seems to have been restructuring forever, and the company has just announced yet another phase in the seemingly endless process of change. Since British Gas was privatized in 1986, it has been a long, hard struggle for the company to adapt to its role in the private sector and take up its rightful position in the international gas business. One of the unfortunate legacies from BG's days of state ownership was a sense of omnipotence: deeply embedded in its culture was the belief that the rest of the world danced to its tune. However, dramatic developments at home and abroad over the past years have put paid to any such notions. This decade has seen full liberalization of the British gas market. At the same time, the gas business has become truly globalized, as gas has become the preferred fuel in just about every corner of the world.
