The underrepresentation of African Americans,Latinas/Latinos,Native Americans and white females in the engineering workforce has been well documented.Universities and employers have taken steps to recruit and retain minority and women engineers and to make the workplace more diverse.Even so,Michelle K.Bothwell, associate professor of chemical engineering at Oregon State Univ.(OSU),believes that "to promote a community in which everyone is engaged,we must educate those in the dominant culture (e.g.,white people, men, heterosexuals) about oppression and privilege." So she is attacking the problem at a deeper level in a course on social ethics in engineering.
