TransCanada PipeLines Limited (TransCanada) has successfully used a liquid-coupled, ultrasonic crack-detection tool to locate stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) on a 104-mi section of 36-in. pipe near Edson, Alberta (Fig. 1).In June 1999, two in-line runs were performed on TransCanada's Western Alberta System Extension (WASE), which experienced an SCC incident on Aug. 8, 1998. A liquid-coupled, ultrasonic crack-detection tool was selected for its ability to accurately identify and size crack-like defects.
