According to early figures from Eurogas, the Brussels-based organization representing the European Union's (EU's) gas industry, gas demand in its member countries showed a healthy growth rate of 2 5% m 2001 to reach 14.3 Tcf (406 Bcm). This includes Switzerland and Turkey, which do not belong to the EU but are members of Eurogas. While the figures are based on estimates from some countries, Eurogas identified certain key factors in the region's strong growth. Contributing factors were a marked increase in residential customers in addition to a steady rise in the number of commercial and industrial users, and confirmed strong growth in demand from the power sector, both from power companies and industrial cogeneration plants. For the first time in several years, Eurogas cited colder weather as a farther impetus behind the increase in demand. On the downside, the region's slowdown in economic growth during 2001 had a knock-on effect on industrial consumption, which fell slightly last year.
