A man carrying a backpack and a strange yellow cone shaped antenna walks across a dessert landscape taking readings from a small hand held instrument, he checks the instrumentation, adjusts his head set and turns on the power to a small black box at his feet. Notes are taken and the equipment is stowed away. The man walks back to his vehicle and departs. This scene is repeated between tracking teams at alternating locations along the 250 mile corridor. The scene resembles an episode of a new science fiction movie.Actually an on-line pipeline geometry inspection is taking place. All the above ground activities are associated with data collection for pipeline mapping needs, future excavation points, permanent location ground reference logging and real time communications with the inspection tool.
